Jennifer Merchant
Jennifer Merchant’s work explores transparency, graphic illusions, and magnification. In a labor-intensive process, she layers acrylic with images and metal foil which she then sculpts by hand into individual multi-dimensional, wearable pieces of art.
“My inspirations come from art deco, geometric form, pop art and Swiss design. I enjoy taking elements from diverse backgrounds and blending them to create new and exciting pieces with an underlying sense of familiarity.” -Jennifer Merchant
Jennifer Merchant discovered metalsmithing in high school and went on to earn a BFA in Metals and Jewelry from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005. Returning to her hometown of Minneapolis after graduation, Merchant began experimenting with alternative materials. Working with solid acrylic sheet and collage-like imagery, Merchant developed the layered acrylic process for which she is known today. A full-time studio artist, Merchant's jewelry has been featured in various national publications such as American Craft and Ornament magazines and has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country.
