Paulette Werger
Paulette Werger uses traditional techniques including fabrication, Keum-boo, and casting, to achieve fully three-dimensional, small wearable sculptures. Inspired from a young age by the careers of her grandfather, a painter trained in the Hudson River School, and her father, a mechanic, Paulette spent many hours as a child “rambling through fields and woods, building tree forts and drawing pictures.” She is drawn to the beauty of everyday objects and on any given day can be found prowling through flea markets and antique stores “in search of the perfect pair of hand-smoothed pliers.”
“My attempt is to capture the tenuous bits and pieces of the garden and translate them into objects…Playing with the metaphor of cycles of life and growth allows me to work within a simple visual narrative. The work is intentionally pared-down, simple and spare as the first forms of spring or the last of winter.”
Paulette received her B.S. in Painting and Sculpture from the College of Saint Rose and Skidmore College in NY, and her M.F.A. in Art Metal from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work has been exhibited widely, including the Chazen Museum of Art, the Renwick Gallery of Craft, and the Fuller Craft Museum. She has received numerous design awards including a Niche award and a New Hampshire Remarkable Woman award. Her work is featured in permanent collections such as the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and the AVA Gallery and Art Center. Paulette teaches workshops in jewelry making and metalsmithing techniques and is a founding member of Metalpeople Studio in Madison, WI. Her current studio, Metalpeople East, is located in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
