Night/Dazed: New Work by Jennifer Merchant
June 6, 2018 - June 26, 2018
Reception: Sunday, June 10 at 1:00 PM
Facèré presents Night/Dazed, a collection of layered acrylic jewelry and small sculpture by artist Jennifer Merchant. Night/Dazed invites viewers to gaze deep into the layered abyss and explore illusions of time and space. These works combine graphic black and white op art prints with images from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, and layers them between solid acrylic. The layered acrylic is hand sculpted into various geometric forms, creating pieces that are graphic and colorful from one angle and transparent from the other. Wonderfully dimensional, each piece changes as it's viewed from different angles.
Artist Jennifer Merchant discovered metalsmithing in high school and went on to earn a BFA in Metals and Jewelry from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005. Returning to her hometown of Minneapolis after graduation, Merchant began experimenting with alternative materials. Working with solid acrylic sheet and collage-like imagery, Merchant developed the layered acrylic process for which she is known today. A full-time studio artist, Merchant's jewelry has been featured in various national publications such as American Craft and Ornament magazines, and has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country.
